Pillars of a Nourishing Diet

If you’ve ever wondered what the pillars of a nourishing diet are, you aren’t alone.

Over the years, I have learned through my health journey and my training, that diet can be a dangerous word, with different meanings. To most people it means some sort of weight loss protocol that they try out to get a quick fix and get weight off fast.

To a nutritionist and other health coaches like myself, it means using food as medicine. For example, when you hear me talk about a whole foods diet, that means eating nutrient dense foods that nourish the body. By using food as medicine, or a nutrient dense diet, it helps to nourish your body, and address a lot of the root causes of digestive issues, thyroid issues, autoimmune diseases, and all the symptoms that come along with all these illnesses.

Now I’m going to say something, that you’ve probably already heard and might not be ready to implement into your lifestyle. When you remove processed foods, refined sugar, remove or reduce alcohol, and if you have an autoimmune disease—removing gluten from one’s diet and lifestyle will do wonders in improving symptoms and addressing many root causes that cause these illnesses.

This biggest question I hear from clients is how we can address weight loss. So let me briefly touch on this. When you have a nourishing nutrient dense diet, the weight and inflammation in your body will melt off and the symptoms you feel like brain fog, and fatigue will also melt away.

Nourishing foods to add into your diet are:

1.       Highest quality foods- organic, grass-fed meats and dairy, free range chickens, and wild caught fish.

2.       Healthy Fats---like ghee, grass fed butters, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, and avocados are healthy fats that feed your brain. Say goodbye to a low-fat lifestyle. We want all the good fats to support excellent brain function and help to balance your blood sugar levels.

3.       Bone broth- Bone broth is packed with amino acids which are beneficial to your body, it also supports digestion and good gut health, weight loss, and the collagen from bones used to make bone broth also help to improve skin elasticity—hello anti-aging benefits!

4.       No processed foods- all the prepacked foods that have more than 5 ingredients listed are full of chemicals and sugar that disrupt hormones and the digestive track.

5.       Eat the rainbow- The more colorful vegetables and fruits you add to each meal the more nutrients your body gets.

6.       Cruciferous veggies- Veggies like broccoli, brussels sprouts, arugula, Bok choy, cabbage, collard, and mustard greens, packed with fiber which is great for detoxification. Also full of Vitamin C, Folate, Potassium, and selenium.

7.       Water! - Water is also great for detoxification. Remember to drink half of your body weight in ounces in water, DAILY to the best benefits.
